What will we learn?

We will explore the various functions and roles of art and architecture in different societies. Students will learn how materials influence form in architecture, sculpture and painting, and how how evolving techniques express new ideas. We will study the main themes of ancient and Christian art, along with the symbolism found in secular genres such as portrait and still life. We will begin with the earliest examples of prehistoric art and trace the development of art and architecture in Egypt, the Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece, and Rome, continuing through Western Europe up to the late 19th century, with occasional references to other cultures.

What will instruction look like?

Classroom lessons will be held every two weeks, excluding school holidays and the month of January, and will be complemented by city walks and museum visits. Two city walks will offer an opportunity to explore different architectural styles and elements in the urban space. Small-group visits to the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum, and the Gemäldegalerie will provide a chance to encounter the works of art in their material presence. Students will be encouraged to analyze works of art and architecture using both knowledge gained in class and insights from other sources.

What are the goals?

  • To familiarize students with major periods in European art history and with key concepts such as genre, style, format, order, etc.
  • To understand the importance of context in interpreting and appreciating works of art.
  • To develop visual awareness and the ability to critically appreciate art and architecture.
