What will we learn?
In my course we will explore what media is in today’s world. We will study the main genres of journalism. We will learn how to interview, write reports and even make a documentary movie. We will learn about the world’s most successful examples of journalism and explore the best and worst aspects of the journalistic profession. We will also pay a lot of attention to the art of storytelling. In just a few sessions we will learn how to write scripts and understand why we remember some stories for life, while we forget others the next day. We will learn how to work with true information and distinguish it from fake news. We will study how propaganda works and learn how to resist information manipulation to protect ourselves from
the ocean of lies that modern media offers us.
How will we work?
Classes will be as interactive as possible. Students will not only focus on the theoretical aspects, but will become journalists themselves for the duration of the course, completing assignments, creating texts, video works and reports. Students will actually create their own newsroom, where they will make their own editorial decisions and create their own media under the guidance of the instructor. The classes will rarely resemble classic school lessons, because journalism is born, above all, in real life.
What will we do besides theory?
In addition to theoretical knowledge my course will involve a lot of “fieldwork”. We will work in each of the existing journalistic genres, and will watch documentaries that will help us understand the whole set of tools needed to create good stories. We will also produce our own newspaper, which will be made up of student submissions. Finally, we will also periodically visit professional newsrooms in Berlin to be inspired by the work of professional journalists.
