Stepan Akulin

Stepan Akulin was born in Moscow in 2005. Fascinated by mathematics from an early age, he attended the specialized mathematics program at School No. 179, one of the city’s leading mathematics schools. There, he studied university-level material years ahead of the standard curriculum and competed in the All-Russian Mathematical Olympiad, reaching the final round.

With the start of the Russo-Ukrainian War, he left his homeland with his family before he could compete in the final. He searched for a way to continue his education, living first in Armenia and then in Latvia. There, he gained his first experience giving in-person lessons to fellow emigrants and working as an assistant for online courses at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

He was accepted into a classe préparatoire, which prepares students for the entrance exams of France’s most selective higher-education institutions. He learned French from scratch in the months before classes began. After three years of preparation, he was admitted to the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris, where he completed a double bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Stepan is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Mathematics. Alongside his studies, he tutors students online and teaches at Lyzeum, helping them not only master the material but also discover the elegance and joy of mathematics.
